Do you remember the New Composites workshops we hosted with UAL last year? For us, they were an eye opener to a new world of alternative yarns, and we are currently on our way to Somerset House (on a very hot Friday in London), to set up for a weekend of YKWU workshops at their Upgrade Yourself Festival.
This beginner friendly edition of YKWU is an excuse to play with new gen yarns, as we explore their properties and best use, from wool made from London sheep; flat yarn made from cellulose fibres and yarns made from recycled materials; aswell as deadstock from previous Somerset House projects. Join us in making swatches and mini wallets using new materials this Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.
The festival is aimed at 16-30 year olds wanting to explore the creative industries and develop their skills. Alongside our knitting club there will be talks, workshops and food.
When: Friday 13 June from 4pm and Saturday 14 June from 2pm
Where: New Wing, Somerset House (we are in the River Rooms!)
ABOUT THE YARNS
London City Farm Yarn (Friday)
London is home to 14 registered city farms, where sheep are sheared annually, resulting in over a tonne of high-quality fleece that goes to waste. Ossian have produced small quantities of yarn, a wool blend of London sheep fleece. All sales go back to the city farms to enable them to continue their charitable work.
Tina Tape Yarn (Saturday)
In collaboration with Wool and the Gang, we bring you Tina Tape, a yarn made from eucalyptus tree fibre using renewable energy. It is softer-than silk, cooler-than-linen flat tape yarn’s vegan and uses no nasty chemicals either.
